Therapy is a series of one-on-one sessions between you and a therapist to explore, expose, develop understanding and heal the issue(s) that prompted you to seek help. Therapy is founded on the relationship between you and the therapist, so it is important to find someone who is a good match for you.
You will complete some paperwork in advance of the first session. During the first session, I will ask questions about your issues, your symptoms and your background in a conversational format. The purpose of the first session is to assess where to focus treatment, but it is also the first step towards us building a relationship in which you can feel heard, seen, supported and safe.
No, I do not prescribe medication. I will offer therapeutic interventions that can supplement/be supplemented with medication.
It generally means that I pay attention to what happened to you rather than what is wrong with you. Whether you have experienced shock trauma from a single event, cumulative trauma over multiple events, or attachment trauma from early life, I pay attention to how those may be affecting you today and how to heal from them.
What I mean by "somatically-oriented" is that I attend to your body reactions in session as a means to quickly access material that might otherwise take a long time to surface through talking alone. I also use methods from mindfulness and energy psychology as well as information from ayurveda to inform my interventions and suggestions.
